For this assignment you will add multimedia files
to the content of one of your site's pages. If you have a
"Portfolio" page, I suggest adding the content to that page.
Your new content will include at least onesound file and
onemovie
that the user can choose to
ignore or play, at their prerogative. This means that:
Your page must display a control panel for each media item.
Your page must NOT
automatically play the sound files or movies when the page loads.
NOTE: FreeHostia limits your file uploads to 500Kb in their
free hosting plan, which is not much.
If your files are too big, you have a choice to make: Either
Find a smaller file. Or
Compress your file to a smaller size. Several compressors are listed in
the eHandout. Or
Upgrade your hosting plan to a paid plan at FreeHostia. Their plans
are very reasonably priced, but please note that I am NOT necessarily
recommending that you upgrade.
Try to
include sound files or movies that somewhat fit the "theme" of
your web site, but this is not a strict requirement. You can
include any sound file or movie as long as it is not illegal,
defamatory, or
offensive.
You may either download or create your sound or video files. If you download
them, you will need to give credit to each file's author. You can put some brief
text near the control panels, which cites each author's information.
Some possible sources of royalty-free videos and sound files are:
Pexels.com Look for "Explore"
in the top menu, then "Free Videos". (But be careful --
if you click "Sponsored Videos" you will probably be connected to videos that
you need to pay for.)
You must use HTML5 <audio> tags and HTML5 <video> tags
to include your sound file and movie
in your page.
IMPORTANT: DO NOT use links to
online YouTube videos as your movies. But if you can download
a video from YouTube, you may use the downloaded version as a source
for your <video> tag.
This page should be complete when you are done with adding
sounds or movies.
Validate your HTML page with the W3C's
HTML
Validator page. I will also be validating your page, so this
validation will be part of your grade.
Validate your stylesheet page with the W3C's
CSS Validator page. I will also be validating your
page, so this validation will be part of your grade.
Upload your pages to your Freehostia site.
You can test your pages on the server by selecting the
"Student Sites" link on the class site and then
clicking your student number in the bulleted list. You will probably
need to refresh/reload the page in your browser in order to see
your changes.
