MIME Types

MIME is the abbreviation for Multipurpose Internet Mail Extensions. It is a standard way of telling the browser and the Web server what kind of data they are dealing with.

Another excellent, cross-referenced list is available at the IANA.ORG site at http://www.iana.org/assignments/media-types/media-types.xhtml.

Wikipedia has a fairly decent listing at http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Mime_type.
